Hamam Abbiad

The creation of Hamam Abbiad is a story of solidarity, cultural exchange, and a shared passion for music. Founded in September 2016 in Hagen by musician Maren Lueg and three talented musicians with refugee backgrounds from Syria, the band embodies a fusion of various cultural influences and musical traditions. The members of Hamam Abbiad come from diverse and challenging backgrounds, hailing from Damascus, Aleppo, and northern Syria. There music is a vibrant and energetic blending  Arabic folk and classical music from Syria, Lebanon, and Iraq. The group is distinguished by its wide variety of instruments, producing a broad spectrum of sounds. From the traditional Oud, Kurdish Tanbur, and Arabic Nay flutes to Western instruments like the Saxophone and Transverse flute, Hamam Abbiad unites these diverse tones into a colorful and artistic musical experience. With regular performances in venues across Germany. The band has also received recognition and support from the North Rhine-Westphalia Cultural Secretariat.

Hamam Abbiad is more than just music. They represent a bridge between cultures, a connection forged through the universal language of music. Their performances are not just concerts but cultural events that bring together people from different backgrounds, transporting them to a world filled with sound and harmony.

Maren Lueg (Saxophone, Flute, Ney, Kawal flutes, Mizmar)

completed her bachelor’s degree in Jazz at the UHI in Scotland with distinction and master’s degree in Middle Eastern Music at the University of London (SOAS). Her musical activities encompass a wide range of traditional musical forms including Middle-Eastern genres, jazz, experimental music and classical music as well as theatre and film music.

Maren Lueg founded the Ensemble Hamam Abbiad in North Rhine-Westphalia in 2016, the EastWest Pacem Orchestra with Syrian and German musicians in 2017 and started the Dubarabi project in 2018 in close cooperation with the producer Spy, based in Cairo and New York. Since 2018 she has been working as a freelance artist with Theater Hagen for the Junge Bühne Lutz as a musician and composer.

As a member of the „NRWedding Orchester for Middle Eastern Music,“ she performed on the project “DIVA: Celebrating Oum Kalthoum” in Dortmund, Düsseldorf and Bochum in the 2018-19 season.

Adnan Hiso (Kurdish Tanbur, Electro-Saz and vocals)

Adnan and his family fled the unrest in northern Syria in 2013.  In his homeland, Adnan played mainly Kurdish music at celebrations and for his family and friends. Since Adnan has lived in Germany, he has expanded his musical repertoire and participated in various intercultural projects. Andan Hiso is a permanent member of the EastWest Pacem Orchestra.

Georg Al Azar (Oud, vocals)

built his musical career as a singer and composer over many years in Syria. In the historic part of Damascus, he had a long residency as a singer in the Sydnaya and toured regularly across Lebanon, North Africa and the Gulf states before fleeing the war in Syria in 2015. Georg Al Azar is a permanent member of the EastWest Pacem Orchestra and took part in the play ‘Der Junge mit dem Koffer’ in 2018 in the Stadt Theatre Hagen.

Mohamad Usaid Aldrobi (Percussion)

Having studied music for over 20 years, Mohamad Usaid Aldrobi is a sought-after darabuka and riqq performer across the Middle East, Tunisia and Morocco. He worked for a long time in Arab music orchestras in Cairo and performed not only in the Middle East, but also in Germany, France and Argentina before he was forced to flee his homeland. He is part of the „NRWedding Orchester for Middle Eastern Music,“ which, under the title “DIVA: Celebrating Oum Kalthoum,” performed the singer’s music as part of large productions in Dortmund, Düsseldorf and Bochum in the 2018-19 season. He is also a permanent member of the East West Pacem Orchestra and the Husam Al-Ali Ensemble from Berlin, performing the music of Egyptian legends Oum Kalthoum and Mohammed Abdel Wahaba.
